As a ninth grader, your student has been enrolled in the Freshman Academy (FA) at North Marion. The purpose of the Freshman Academy is to increase student achievement by providing structure and support for freshmen students, create a focused curriculum geared toward their age and abilities, and ease the transition between 8th and 9th grades. The intention is to integrate them into the high school culture in a successful way.

FA goals include: increased student achievement (academic and personal), consistent attendance, high student expectations of themselves and school, and better communication between teachers and students, teachers and parents, and students and parents. Students will be expected to maintain at least a 70% grade average in their FA classes.

Please be aware of the following policies regarding the Freshmen Academy:

• Grading policy – Work will be graded according to the Common Core Standards.
• Reassessment & late work policy – Students will be allowed to turn in missing work, and redo assignments, however, there will be restrictions. Please see FA class syllabus’s for details.
• Homework policy – Students should expect homework, but the amount will vary.

Ninth graders operate on a different schedule than the rest of the school. Freshmen are enrolled in World History, Science, and English three trimesters, rather than two as the older grades. We start and release class according to the clock instead of the bell. FA teachers have discovered that this consistent schedule with the same students all year allows an improved knowledge of our students’ academic needs, as well as communicates consistent expectations to freshmen.
